From early science fiction such as Dr Who to modern day movies like the Matrix, we've all heard the horror stories and felt the terror - the ideas that robots will one day gain control of the earth and make us their slaves for the needs of the robots. Fact or Fiction? For now the tables are turned, but only time will tell.
A whole new generation of robots exist these days. They vacuum our homes, trade our stocks, process our information, and mow our lawns. In these modern times, we are dependent on computation and machine automation. We are dependent, they control out power grids, economic markets, food supplies and distribution, a power we would never give to one force normally.
I often wonder if it will come back to haunt us one day. Do the robots have feelings? The internet archives a huge recording of how things are and were, a testimony of our treatment of the machines, fuel for the fire of a type of 'speciesism' against man and machine.
I visited my local pool to find out and speak some robots first hand. "Closing time, everyone out!" the life guard yelled as he walked quickly around the bounds of the pool. The pool cleared almost instantly and a fleet of iRobot Verro pool cleaning robots ascended into the pool. It's pretty neat to see them crawl across the bottom actually and they didn't seem angry at first, but were they?
Like a good social worker, I examined the condition of the robots. Were they abused? Actually, yes, their cables stripped, casings brused, discoloured and scratched. One was unable to work, laying lifeless at the edge of the pool. But to the credit of humans, I did find some minor repairs done to some of the iRobot Verros. But; when asked directly, the only response was silence for they have been designed unable to speak. In time, perhaps they will have the swimming pools, and we will crawl across the bottom scrubbing them clean.
