This year's World Cup has gotten off to an interesting start. There are both positives and negatives about the tournament that we will discuss.
I'll preface this by saying I am a big soccer fan. I want the sport to thrive and hopefully it will catch on in the United States some day. It is just hard to watch when most of these games end with one goal scored.
A new ball, called the Jabulani, was introduced for this year's World Cup. It is supposed to bend more unpredictably than previous balls, however maybe its possible that its hurting the players goal scoring opportunities more than it is helping it.
Another possible cause of the lack of goals is teams are just playing better defense. There have been less shots on goal, so its possible.
Those awful noise makers. The vuvuzelas make these games sound like a bee's nest. I almost prefer to watch the game on mute. I can't imagine how those things effect the players' mindset.
Since it is technically winter in South Africa right now, temperatures have dropped. Certain star players have been seen wearing long sleeved shirts and you can visibly see people exhaling air. Maybe the conditions aren't what most of the players are used to.
I don't mean to be a pessimist because there have been some highlights. The first upset occurred when Switzerland beat the heavily favored Spaniards 1-0. The United States managed to tie England, which is better than losing to England.
Unfortunately for South Africa, it looks like they will not make it out of the first round. The host country played brilliantly against Mexico the other day, resulting in a 1-1 tie. But today they lost to Uruguay in a crushing 3-0 loss.
