The Best Christian Bale Movies Of The Past Ten Years

By Jason Ziegler

When it comes to versatile male actors in Hollywood these days, there are only a few. Daniel Day Lewis is the king; Leonardo Di Caprio is great, as is Johnny Depp. But another fantastic actor that was overlooked until recently is Christian Bale.

Let's take a look at some of his greatest performances.

The Dark Knight - Let's get the obvious out of the way. Arguably the greatest comic book movie of all time, this movie is truly a masterpiece. It took a bunch of tries before Hollywood was able to invigorate the Batman franchise before they got it right with Christian Bale.

Another incredible movie by the duo of Bale and director Christopher Nolan was The Prestige. Also starring Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johannson, Bale does an incredible job of playing a talented magician who has some dark secrets up his sleeve that are revealed at the end of the movie.

The Machinist - This movie is the epitome of an actor devoting himself to a role. Bale lost over 70 pounds for this movie, eating only an apple and a can of tuna every day for months in preparation for a movie that was in limited release.

American Psycho - An instant cult classic, in American Psycho, Christian Bale plays Patrick Bateman better than anyone else I can image. The movie is a satire of the 1980s and Bale is both hysterical and terrifying at the same time. I have probably seen this one fifteen times.

Inspired by a true story, in Werner Herzog's Rescue Dawn, Christian Bale plays an imprisoned US pilot during the Vietnam War who plans an escape into the jungles of Laos. Sufficed to say, he lost a ton of weight for this movie as well.

Equilibrium - This movie is sort of bad, but amazing. In a futuristic world where humans take pills to suppress any sort of emotion, Christian Bale does a great job at showing his struggle to feel, while taking down bad guys at the same time.
