Seventy Two - Some Totally Retro 70s Halloween Costumes, Man!

By Liam Joshuwa

Recent years have brought about a new found love of 70s Halloween costumes. For some, the retro hippie look is a reminder of good times and freedom. Others see it as an era of outrageous fashion and hair. Still more find humor in the style. The 1970s bold colors and unique shapes pave the way for many options when it comes to 70s Halloween costumes. No matter what style you prefer, you can find the perfect fit for your 70s personality!

Hippies were a big, if not controversial, part of the 1970s. Bell-bottom pants and tie-dyed shirts were all the rage. Release your inner flower child with a totally groovy, hippie look. It can be fun to be one with nature, even if it is for only one night out of the year. Do not get too caught up in the lifestyle, though. If you plan to party with friends, I highly recommend you still bathe!

British music was popular during the 1970s as well. The genre became just as famous in the United States as it was across the pond. Consider Brit themed attire, complete with Sergeant Peppers-style jacket, either purchased or handmade. If you play guitar, why not practice a few Beatles riffs and bring your instrument along to really live the part.

Maybe hippy outfits and Beatles impersonations are not your thing; you could try being chic? just in a retro way. You could be dressed up to look like one of Scooby Doos new friends. Think about it, with the go-go boots, the mini-skirt, and a polyester scarf tied around the neck, you could create 70s Halloween costumes to remember.

Keep in mind when choosing your particular 70s styled costume there are many places to look for inspiration. From Foxy Brown to Superfly there are all sorts of title characters that one could use to model their 70s Halloween costume after. Depending on your creativity level, you can draw ideas from, or totally mimic, the style of your favorite celebrity from the seventies.

The other thing to keep in mind is that you dont have to use those obvious references, like the hippy, when coming up with your 70s Halloween costumes idea. Retro doesnt mean that you cant use a more obscure aspect of the decade when designing your costume. You could be a character from Star Wars for example. Watching popular old movies can help give you some idea of which direction to take.

Remember that if you really want to go all the way with your 70s Halloween costumes you shouldn't just dress the part, you have to act it out as well. Do a search of the common words and phrases associated with the decade if you want to add another dimension to your costume; this way you can go retro in your words as well as your dress. If you'd decided to go with a British themed outfit - why not try out your version of the British accent.

I say go all out with your 70s Halloween costumes. This is a decade that is rich with color as well as history. So do what you can to add depth and drama to your retro look. Whether you are impersonating a specific celebrity of the time or come up with our own collage based on a myriad of images, make it interesting and fun. With a little extra thought, plus some research, you can come up with a 70s Halloween costumes for not only you but your friends also. Edited by Hetsil Protage
