There is definitely much to learn when you start planning events, parties or celebrations. When you first start, you try to plan things out but bad things happen, people make changes and you world comes crashing down.
When I was a novice I was no different. I wanted to be successful at it but I just did not have the attention to detail that someone more experienced in the job would have. You can try reading but no matter what you do, you will not be able to replicate good old fashioned "doing."
Now as an expert, I will try to consider every little thing that can go wrong or differently and plan accordingly. Factors such as what religion the people attending will be or what someone might be feeling when they show up are important and should not be overlooked.
When a novice plans an event they may give these things minor thought, but for the most part they don't know how to resonate with the crowd and construct the experience.
Probably my best example of the effect of experience on performance was when I was just starting out. A friend of mine hired me to plan their wedding and decided to give me a chance. My price range was relatively cheap so it made sense for her.
A great place to have a wedding and also make it cheap is to have it outside at a park! We decided that the park down the street would suffice. After all, we could drink and just walk back to her house since the reception area was right there as well! We just dressed up some tables with the plastic tablecloths with tissue paper on one side.
There was more than one purpose to have the decorative items on the tables. We needed some weight to keep the plastic table covers from blowing away and we need them to look good too.
The wedding went terrific! The reception is when things sort of went down hill. Even though overall the event went well; I was embarrassed because of a few things.
First, was because I had forgotten what a great place a public park is to walk your dog. Combine that fact with the fact that it was night time for the reception and we had several guests step in more than a few "treasures."
Second, It was night time so the moisture from the grass and condensation built up on the plastic table covers and got absorbed into the paper on them. This made them wrinkle very much!
The third problem was because we didn't use any sort of table skirt for the tables, the wind was blowing pieces of the wet paper off of the table covers.
Well, I learned my lessons from the experience and figure that now the tissue paper needs to stay in doors and to use plastic tablecloths outside where they will not be destroyed by the elements.
