Five Easy Pranks to Pull in the Office

By Gordon Shumway

Right after April Fool's day, the web is swamped with pictures of silly shenanigans done in workplaces all over the world. A lot of of these pranks require plenty of energy. There are cubicals filled with balloons, popcorn, or packing peanuts. There are the offices where everything has been elaborately wrapped with aluminum foil, newspaper, or toilet paper. The trouble with these practical jokes is that they take so much time and effort to carry out and once the handiwork is introduced, the ruse is over.

Most of us just don't have the time required to wrap every single object in a coworker's office with aluminum foil. A more appealing option would be a prank we can prepare in a short time and the life of the prank lasts hours or days.

Here are five simple office jokes. The beauty of them is that they have the potential to last much longer than the shock of finding your office loaded with packing peanuts.

1) This one is both quick and easy. It can be executed in seconds. Most displays will invert your screen with the Control + Alt + down arrow key combination. It can be quickly restored with the Control + Alt + up arrow key combination. In fact if you are up for some testing, you can use the right and left arrow keys in that combination for some 90 degree rotations.

2) Optical mice are an easy target. Within each optical mouse is a very fast camera. You can alter the conduct of the mouse by altering the optics of the mouse. This is simply done by placing a strip of transparent tape over the lens on the bottom of the mouse. This will generate a sluggish mouse. Opaqe tape is also a possibility but will leave the mouse ineffective and you will get less mileage out of this prank.

3) Along the lines of messing with someone's mouse, you can plug the dongle of a wireless mouse into a co-worker's computer. Then with the corresponding mouse, you can remotely control the cursor on your co-worker's screen. This is best done if the computer has a USB port in the back of the computer where the new dongle is not viewed. Another variation on this would be to plug in a wireless keyboard. Then you can contribute to the keyboard input of your co-worker's computer.

4) The computer monitor is also an easy target for hacking. There are a variety of things that can be carried out but definitely the easiest is to adjust the brightness down with the external buttons until the screen is entirely black. The clueless victim will try out all sorts of things to "wake" the computer before monkeying with the power cable and on/off switch. Unless they are someone who regularly adjusts the brightness of his or her monitors, it will take them some time before the real solution appears.

5) Telephones are also great targets for co-worker pranks. If you can disassemble the headset, an easy hack is to cover the holes of the speaking portion with tape. The victim will then hear the caller but not be heard. The victim then repeats all he or she says louder and louder. If you don't have time to take apart the headset or if it just isn't feasible, you may be able to unplug the headset at the phone base and tape the end of the cord to the back of the phone base giving the impression that it is still hooked up. Use strong tape. Duct tape works.

So there they are, five quick and easy practical jokes to play on someone in your office.
