Fancy Dress trends for 2012

By Arnold Shubert

For the ultimate party night go retro and throw a themed fancy dress party. Whether you're looking for something festive, something for a birthday or something that says a big thank you or well done, fancy dress brings glitz and sparkle to any special occasion. All you have to do to begin is choose your theme and decide whether, for example you're a cowboys and Indians type of person or someone who enjoys 80s or 70s fancy dress.

Some may opt for a sit down five course meal, others a garden tea party. You may even find yourself invited to a dinner-dance with band and DJ. However if you're looking for something a bit special to make a celebration one you'll never forget, why not organise a fancy dress party and take the opportunity to create a bit of a stir with a sexy fancy dress outfit and a themed party space. Combine style and flare with fun and play and dress up by dressing retro.

However, before you start planning the party in detail decide on the decade you'll base your party in. If you like big bold outfits and a bit of gender bending then try an 80s fancy dress theme. Go for a New Romantics look and head for Culture Club, Ultravox and Duran Duran for inspiration. Big hair, rainbow make-up and as many ruffs, glittering suits and glittering accessories as possible will make for a wild night.

Or opt for famous films of the 1980's, including characters from Topgun, Wonder Woman and Ghostbusters. Don't hold back! Go full out and team sparkly belts and lurex shorts with tutus and legwarmers. Match an 80's style pair of shades with a big moustache or a large hat.

Maybe you fancy a few of the 70's dance classics instead. Maybe a glitter ball and disco is more your kind of thing. In that case leave your legwarmers at the door and swap your tutu and straight line suit for flares, mini dresses and wide collared shirts; 1970s fancy dress party here we come!

You could even dress as a well known character from 70's films or bands, making the most of an outrageous costume by teaming tight fitting body suits with glitter and sequins. Of course an Elvis rock and roll outfit is a classic fancy dress look guaranteed to top the bill.

For a more generic, but equally show stopping look for 2012 match a pair of bright coloured flares with large gold wedges, gold belt and medallion. Add a wig and large brimmed shades and your 1970s fancy dress party look is complete! For a simple retro style for any keen female party goer try a bold print mini dress paired with high cut suede boots for a sexy fancy dress outfit that brings the 70's back to life in an instant.

Whatever theme or style of fancy dress party you choose you'll be sure to have a ball, just make sure you choose your music and food to match. What would a 70s fancy dress party be without some classic Waterloo on in the background!
