This is the age old question and I'd like to put my input in on this subject from actual real life experience. I have found that money is not quite what it is stacked up to be when it comes to achieving true inner peace and happiness.
They teach us at a young age that we are supposed to be productive and make money to be successful in life. This is partially true since without structure and responsibilities life can become quite chaotic.
They need to tell us in school that life is much more pleasant when we are doing what we are meant to do, what we are here for in the first place. Earning money is necessary but working for the mere goal of this is not fulfilling like finding and exposing our talents is and creating a meaningful existence.
There are clues given to us in life and we are given things for a reason, these clues help direct us to a meaningful life. What if Mozart never played the piano and followed his dreams. He may have been a banker or a butcher and always had an emptiness within for not following his God given talent and chasing his bliss.
How are we supposed to find our purpose you ask? Most the times its not an obvious answer so we need to learn to listen for it. Taking time to be silent and sit in solitude is a great way to get answers to the questions you'd never thought to ask. Meditation is a perfect way to do this and is really effective when done on a daily basis.
I have an engineering degree and I started my own successful company and ran it for about 10 years before pursuing my passion of comedy at the age of 38. This was the first time I stepped on stage. Its never too late to chase your dreams, my one friend from NYC was 82 when he began performing comedy. He is still going strong and he is a youthful 85 now, amazing isn't it!
Follow your dreams, don't just work for money. It won't fulfill your inner spirit no matter how much money you make. You will always crave more and will never make enough to ever feel complete and fulfilled for the ego always craves more. It took me 20 years to figure this out, I hope you can find it out sooner and I wish you the best in whatever you strive to do. Go for it, face your fears head on, get out there and do what you love.
