A couple of months ago my cousin told me about a website that could create custom figurines from photos and I immediately thought that sounded like an awesome idea. He couldn't recall the address and so I simply jumped online and performed a short Google search. What I uncovered is that there are, in reality, numerous websites that can craft a custom figurine from a series of photographs. Many of these sites offer these figurines as custom cake toppers for weddings (bride/groom figurines). While I had to admit that wedding cakes were a ingenious use for them I could not help thinking that the possibilities went well beyond that. And so I decided to have figurines manufactured of myself and my two best friends just to see what the six of us would get up to.
## Vacation photos.
My friend Jake is a bassist and was just getting ready for a cross country tour with his band when I handed him his figurine (a miniature Jake holding a bass guitar). For the next few weeks I was receiving funny perspective pictures of Mini-Jake on vacation; on the beach, in Central Park, in front of a pool, alone in an elevator, on the shoulder of deserted highway with a storm darkening the horizon. Halfway through the trip he started a twitter feed for Mini-Jake and started posting the photos that way.
## Placing words in his head.
The very first thing my roommate Alex did with his custom figurine (Mini-Alex in a Hockey Jersey holding a beer bottle in his hand) was to slap him onto his scanner and print out two stacks of color images; Mini-Alex with an empty thought bubble over his head and Mini-Alex with an empty speech bubble over his head. The thoughts and words of Mini-Alex were soon taped up all over our apartment and soon in the elevator and even in the rest room of our favourite sports bar. Mini-Alex apparently has some very strong opinions about the Boston Bruins.
## A little help in the office.
Mini-me came with me to the office and he has lived in my cubicle ever since. His face has replaced mine as my chat icon and although he generally stands atop my right speaker, any time I do a video chat I've rigged up a special paperclip holster that positions him in front of my webcam. He also sometimes stands atop my cubicle wall to spy on Bruce next door - that is until Bruce notices and starts shooting elastic bands at him.
## Looking for love in all the wrong places..
Not long after Mini-Alex began expressing his opinions in the sportsbar rest room his life got a whole lot more interesting, for Alex had ordered him a little companion. Cassandra, the hot-looking part-time bartender at said sport bar, who was entirely unmoved by Alex attention arrived in Mini-Cassandra form. Mini-Alex and Mini-Cassandra (in her very popular tight white top and denim skirt) were, from then onwards inseparable. I'm not sure if Alex is planning on eventually presenting Cassandra with her mini version, nor would I want to try to predict her reaction but if anyone could turn something so off the wall to his advantage it would be Alex.
There's no end to the antics an imaginative group of individuals can get up to with a set of custom made miniatures. Even if they end up sitting on a shelf gathering dust after a couple of months they are well worth the purchase-price if even simply on a novelty level. If you're considering having a custom built miniature produced of you or someone you know just go online and start looking; there are lots of places out there. Your mini-you will thank you.
