Seventy Six - Hilariously Funny Halloween Costumes: Creating the Fun

By Nicholas Matthews

Funny Halloween costumes are often the characters we remember long after the holiday. The keep us laughing and stretch our imagination. The unexpected appearance of a simple funny Halloween costumes when frightful and terrifying is what we expect increases the laugh factor. There's no limit to the possibilities for humorous outfits as you can pull ideas from popular culture, from the internet or from old time cartoons. For a different slant you might opt for satire or present the other side of a political issue in a way that is hilarious.

You don't want to do the same old thing that's been done year after year. There is humor in most topics and most characters but it can take some thinking to come up with a new concept. Try to look at common daily examples in a new way, add a twist or exaggerate a detail and you have something truly funny.

A woman dressed as Barbara Walters or Sarah Palin is the same old thing. A man cross dressed and exaggerating the speech or characteristic mannerisms of either woman could be hilarious. Perhaps a man dressed as Palin carrying a huge tube of lipstick looking for pigs? It's best to poke fun without being mean spirited with your costume. Keep it light hearted to keep it funny.

You don't have to use people as your characters. You can use wildlife, pets, inanimate objects - whatever strikes your fancy. Interplaying characters with your partner or spouse is a great idea. Imagine a husband cross dressed as a maid accompanied by his wife in a cat suit dressed up as a princess or rich woman. Any cat owner knows our cats think we are staff. A costume that looks like a book might have the title as ""The Story of My Life"" and be covered with rejection slips. A cucumber might be campaigning to become a Vlasic dill pickle. There's no limit to what the imagination can find when you let it fly.

Famous (and often overused) sayings are useful and can be incorporated as an accessory or as the topic of your costume. Remember ""Where's the beef""? For a current topic your character might be ""Miss Behavioral Disorder"" (think beauty pageants) with MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and other social media applications decorating your costume. Poke fun gently and twist your character to make it slightly warped and very funny.

The costumes in this category can get a little bit carried away size-wise. Keep this in mind when designing or purchasing a costume. If it's too huge to fit through the doorway, it is probably not a good choice to wear to your buddies Halloween party. Many people will arrive at parties and get togethers dressed for the occasion, but that is still no excuse for being intrusive because you had to wear the largest, widest costume you could find.

Humor is subjective so take the audience you will have into consideration when making signs or adding suggestive props. For an all adult party you might find anything goes but it's different if children will be present or if your boss might be in attendance. Some stores and malls will not allow a costumed person to enter unless masks are removed. This is a security precaution to keep in mind if you will be wearing your costume on the streets for trick or treating.

Most funny Halloween costumes can be made using items around your home. With an eye to being creative, come with a few possible concepts and look around to see what you might use for those costumes. Keep it as simple as you can and create a funny costume without expending too many hours or dollars. Keep your mind open to possibilities and remember gender identities don't apply to the fantasy of Halloween. Keep it simple and imaginative and play to the laughter in your funny Halloween costume.
