Clybourne Park at Wyndhams Theatre London

By Neil Bennett

Following critical acclaim and a record-breaking sell out run, Bruce Norris' satirical comedy, Clybourne Park, transferred from the Royal Court to the Wyndham's Theatre in the West End in January for a limited season. The play is the latest transfer from the Royal Court, after successes with both ENRON and Jerusalem earlier this year.

In 1959 Russ and Bev are selling their desirable two-bed at a knock-down price. This enables the first Black family to move into the neighbourhood, creating ripples of discontent amongst the cosy white urbanites. In 2009, the same property is being bought by Lindsey and Steve whose plans to raze the house and start again is met with a similar response. Are the issues festering beneath the floorboards actually the same fifty years on? Bruce Norris' (The Pain and the Itch) hilarious satire explores the fault line between race and property.

Charles Wyndham had usually dreamed of developing a theatre of his very own and via the admiration of the patron and also the monetary confidence of friends, he was able to realise his aspiration when Wyndham's Theatre opened in Aldwych Road on 16th November 1899, within the presence of the Prince Of Wales. The initial play actually carried out right here was a revival of T.W.Robertson's 'David Garrick'. The theatre was developed by W.G.R.Sprague.

In 1910 Gerald du Maurier started an association using the theatre which was to final fifteen a long time and to include the stage debut with the display goddess Tallulah Bankhead. Du Maurier's little daughter, Daphne, frequently watched her father's overall performance through the wings and, thirty many years later, she would present her own play, The Years In between, on exactly the same stage.

In January 1954 a small-scale musical pastiche, which had begun life at the tiny Players Theatre, burst onto the Wyndham stage. Sandy Wilson's The Boy Pal ran for an outstanding 2078 performances before at some point transferring to Broadway. For the duration of the sixties and early seventies the theatre continued to offer a setting for stars for example Alec Guinness, Vanessa Redgrave and Diana Rigg. Then, in 1972, came the blockbuster with the decade - Godspell, starring famous names in the original cast like David Essex, Marti Webb, Jeremy Irons, Julie Covington.

More recent times have seen, amongst many distinguished productions, the world premiere of The Ride Down Mount Morgan by Arthur Miller and the British premiere of Edward Albee's Three Tall Women. Twenty-five years after making her debut here, Diana Rigg returned to play a hugely successful season as Medea.

The critically acclaimed comedy, Art began its record-breaking run at the Wyndham's in 1996 with Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay and Ken Stott and has already notched up over 1500 performances into the new millennium. Pop queen Madonna made her West End debut at The Wyndham's performing in a sell-out production of Up For Grabs.
