Persuasion Topics Range Through The Whole Gamut Of Human Activity

By Debbie Smith

Persuasion topics range almost as far and wide as human activities. From international affairs in the United Nations organization, to big business operators to small girls persuading their fathers to let them do things there is a constant sea of persuasion in human behavior. It is possible that small girls without any training in psychology and limited life experience can be as adept as anyone.

Small girls have powers of persuasion out of all proportion to their strength, experience or training. Many of them are perfect examples of natural talent that develops even further as they grow older. They are able to manipulate fathers who may be mountains of muscle and bone and this is just training for when they take on husbands and lovers later in life.

Of course there can be an element of bullying and threat used to make people do things. Gangsters are well known to used force as a way of making people do their bidding. This form of persuasion does not really qualify for consideration because the very word connotes urging or incitement rather than enforcement. A reluctant horse that is forcibly pushed into a horse box is not persuaded to enter because it never reaches a point of going in voluntarily.

Thanks to the mass media politicians and diplomats are not quite so free to do things in private as was the case before. Before a number of countries invaded Iraq which was then under the heel if a vicious dictator, they had to be persuaded to support America which was the ringleader. Arguments about the sufferings of the people seemed to cut no ice and it was only when the 'weapons of mass destruction' card was played that invasion was agreed upon.

It seems that moral suasion is not as powerful as naked threats of force. Other countries were persuaded to support America's wish to invade Iraq, but only when weapons of mass destruction were mentioned. The sufferings of ordinary people were not effective as persuasive tools, but threats of violence were.

In the business world marketing and sales techniques revolve around persuasive techniques. Target audiences are identified and painstakingly gambits are designed to play upon the needs of these audiences. For example men are encouraged to borrow extensively an buy cars that seem to exemplify their success, even though the car may in effect be owned by a bank.

Persuasion topics rise to perfection in domestic spheres. The female gender is, on the whole, a great deal more adept than their male counterparts. In fact their skills, used almost as soon as they are born, develop as they grow older and are probably at their height at that point in their lives when beauty and experience combine so powerfully that they can convince a man to do almost anything.
