I Wanted To See How The Younger Folks Celebrate With Their Irish Drinking Tee Shirts

By Alan Birch

I am a prideful man of pure Irish descent, and if there's one holiday I feel honor-bound to celebrate each and every year...it's Saint Patrick's Day. I enjoy going down to the my local bar and pulling down some thick draft beer while I and the rest of the boys talk about our families and our history. It's a good end to a good day after we've spent time with the wives and kids and had a great, traditional meal. This is how I've always celebrated Saint Patrick's Day and thought that it would be the way I would always continue to do so. That is, until our bar started to be overrun each year by a yelling mob of unruly youngsters in their Irish Saint Patrick's Day tshirts.

I always have seen myself as a fellow who knows how to roll with the punches, so I try not to let the face paint and crazy Irish tshirts bother me too much. What does bother me is that my friends seem to hate it, which really hurts because they told me flat-out that if there were going to be a hundred drunk 20-somethings at the pub then they would celebrate at home. I had to figure out a way to convince the old timers to stay, to get the kids to leave, or to get my old friends drunk enough that they don't care.

In response to the growing problem, I felt a need to take drastic measures. Last year, my friends all told me they weren't going out. No one wanted to deal with the crazy atmosphere that St. Patrick's had taken on. I decided I was going to go out anyway...as one of the enemy. I wore an insane Irish t-shirt and face makeup that I bought at the store. Besides being twice their age, I blended in pretty well.

The first thing I noticed was that the Irish pride tee shirt that I wore was getting a lot of attention. I went with less of the hilarious Irish clothing and more with one that really highlighted my pride in being of full Irish decent. Those young folks treated me with all the respect and admiration as a returning war hero. I am not even entirely certain that I bought a single shot all night long.

Those crazy kids in their crazy Irish party shirts know how to let loose and have a great time, I'll give them that. I'm not really sure it's something I want to do every year. My friends and I have gone to that bar for years, and we've never failed to meet there on a Saint Patrick's Day. I think we're going to have to concede this one to the younger generation, though. It's not like it's the only hole-in-the-wall Irish pub in town. We'll find another and celebrate our way and let those party animals borrow our bar on that one night of the year.
