Where To Get Ideas For Your Jokes

By Bryson Reid

Coming up with their own material is important if a comedian wants to succeed in their chosen career. For one, they cannot use and rehash another comedian's material to come up with their own. Most likely, they will have to resort to improvisation, which they can actually learn from classes handled by professionals. Some people I talked to share how they come up with their own material for their funny jokes.

Get ideas from magazines and the newsstands. The world around you is a sea of material that you can use to come up with your jokes. Politics, Hollywood, and general information can be used as starting points for your jokes. The key here is learning to be creative when choosing your source.

Study what you see on TV and see if you can expound on them even more. There is nothing wrong about getting ideas from what you see on television because they are purely for entertainment purposes only. What you should avoid though is "stealing" another writer's or comedian's material and passing it as your own. Make a review of the following sitcoms: How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, and Seinfeld. All have been successful in making people laugh, and what makes them interesting is how a seed idea has grown so big that the sitcoms became hit shows. Talk about creativity!

You do not have to look far, see what is right beside you now and create a joke out of it. Creativity is what will help you come up with your material. Let your creative juices out and instead of looking for humor on objects that you have around you, find something that makes it amusing or humorous.

Specify everyday events that people take for granted. We do so many things that we just accept as is, but has a huge impact on our lives without even realizing it. And that if we take it away, we realize it was something we could actually live without. For instance, brushing the teeth as soon as you wake up, then eating breakfast and brushing the teeth once again.

Tell about stories relating to superstition or conspiracy theories and other misinformation. Say them as if they are the supreme truth. You might think that you could be confusing people with what you are telling them, but seriously, no one will take it as "truth" because in the first place, they know that it is just a joke. In addition, they know that you are just exaggerating facts, thus, it will just be entertainment for them. Examples of these superstitious beliefs include, "how eating ice cream can lead to nightmares" and "if you make silly faces when a strong wind blows will make the silly face permanent".
