What happened to the Summer?

By Ian Spence

Part of what makes crackers so much fun are the atrocious jokes in them. Everyone gets to pull one and chuckle at the jokes on them, even though they're notorious for not being very funny. The cracker business however, is no laughing matter. In the UK, annually, there are approximately 60mn crackers made. That means there are more crackers pulled at Christmas than there are people.

Most companies go through thousands of jokes and print only about 80 a year and change half of these every other year. The most important factor is simplicity. The idea is that the jokes have to be understood and be acceptable to people of all ages, including very young children. They're also usually sent out far and wide, to places like Australia and New Zealand for Christmas, so the jokes can't be topical or have any distinguishing cultural references that may not be understood or be found amusing in different country.

Plan ahead and start early- The earlier you start planning for Christmas the better. It is a much more effective way of doing things if you spread your workload out across the year rather than squeezing it all in to one month.

And while they're now notorious for bad Christmas jokes, crackers originally had little love poems and notes in them- the perfect fun gift for Valentine's Day or even at weddings.

Another creative tip with wedding crackers to really personalise them is printing the names on your guest list. This makes them double as name tags and make for a nice addition to the table. You can even add a personal message inside them for an extra little surprise.

Bizarrely enough the longest cracker pull isn't about the 1478 people that participated in it but the fact that it was at an event organised in Tochigi, Japan by Honda. It must've been quite the event.

Create time for yourself - If you spread out your duties across the year in preparation for Christmas you will find that you will have a lot more time to yourself when it comes to the actual festivities, making the holiday a stress-free experience. After all, it is the season to be jolly!
