Texas Driving Laws; The Craziest Ones Still On The Books

By Amy Kitchel

Did you know that in the state of Tennessee it is illegal to shoot any game from a moving vehicle except for whales? Or that in Montana it is illegal to have a sheep in the cab of your car without a chaperone? There are silly and antiquated driving laws all around the United States - some of the most ridiculous are here in the great state of Texas.

Lots of us have experienced the pain of getting a ticket for going too fast on Texas roads and highways. You can also be ticketed for going too slow! Police officers say if you're blocking traffic or creating a road hazard by driving unreasonably slowly you can be cited for impeding traffic.

In Richardson, U-Turns are always illegal. Signs are posted at major intersections throughout the city, but U-terms are forbidden everywhere, and drivers can be stopped if they're caught and slapped with a fine of up to $225 for doing a U-Turn or any other kind of "improper turn." Richardson citizens feel strongly about staying on the straight and narrow.

Over on the other side of Texas, in Lubbock County, it is illegal to drive within an arm's length of alcohol - even if that alcohol is in someone else's bloodstream! Next time you're in Lubbock and think about doing a good deed and being your friends designated driver, make sure you are driving a big enough car to keep anyone who has had too much at least than an arm's length away.

A Garland motorist was ticketed by cameras earlier this month for running a red light. He told one of the local news broadcasts that he crossed the stop line as the light was turning red. Then at his hearing his hearing the police officer who ticketed him told him the stop line wasn't where he thought it was. The police officer says the stop line is a lateral line parallel to the curb of the cross street or, "ten feet farther out than where it actually starts." Huh? Confusion abounds when it comes to red light cameras.

Because of this confusion, Governor Perry is said to be considering legislation that will clear up the confusion and make it more clear for drivers where they're supposed to stop and how to avoid those red light camera tickets.

The city with the highest number of ridiculous driving laws and the hardest to keep track of is Galveston. Next time you want to head south for a quick trip to the beach keep these things in mind; you can never drive a car down Broadway Street before noon on a Sunday. Also, make sure not to operate your bicycle at an 'unreasonable speed,' only 'reasonable speeds' are allowed. Don't sit down on the sidewalk to take a break - this can land you a fine of up to $500. And finally, don't throw trash out of an airplane onto the beach and while you're at it, don't land that airplane on the beach, both are against city laws in Galveston.
